    I lived in Colombo as a child between 1961-1965 and our family were members of the Colombo Swimming Club. I do not believe it was ever called the "European" swimming club, but it was definitely discreetly segregated. In Ceylon at that time, the term "European" was a polite euphemism for "Caucasian". I never saw any non-Caucasians at "the club", as it was known. The scary thing is that no-one was shocked...
